#003 Writing Prompt- Haiku Poems
Hello from a drizzly day in Thailand. Come in, let's make some poetry today.
“Who Upset Wind” By Dommy
Wind comes unannounced
Slams the front door, Bang! no words
Clearly she’s upset.
Every week Some for the Imagination sends out writing prompts for our community, today we explore the Haiku and short form poetry.
THE HAIKU POEM
Is a type of short form poetry that originated from Japan. Traditional Japanese Haiku consists of three phrases following a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. The intention of a Haiku is to envoke natural imagery with unrhymed lines.
The Haiku is known for its ability to paint a vivid picture in a few short words.
Haiku Poems draws on a sense of powerful minimalism where the writer must practice artistic discipline to ensure each word counts.
Haiku poems have a seasonal nature theme and usually have a some sort of Kireji or ‘cutting word’ which creates a contrast in the imagery created.
Below is a traditional Haiku from one of the four great masters Matsuo Bashō
‘‘The Old Pond” by Matsuo Bashō
An old silent pond
A frog jumps into the pond—
Splash! Silence again.
Here we can see a very vivid image painted in a few short words using all the elements that make a Haiku. 5-7-5 syllable pattern, Cutting word “Splash”. Nature Poem.
So! this week lets play with creating our own Haiku Poems! Here are some I wrote just now to give you an idea… Please remember this is for CREATIVITY and EXPRESSION above all else.
Some for the Imagination
“Rainy Scooter Drives” by Dommy
The soft rain pelts down
My scooter picks up speed fast
“Ouch!” no coat, it whips.
“Moonlight Night” By Dommy
Moonlight on my lips
Why deny myself pleasure?
when she makes me high
“Long nights” by Dommy
In the dead of night
Howls greet my ears, Heart thumps loud.
Wind cries, “crack”. Whats that?
“Suns Heat” By Dommy
She heats me up quick!
A desirable pleasure
‘Drip’. Sweat. Cool me down.
What do you think? let me know below!! I only found the Haiku this week and have really enjoyed creating poetry in this minimalistic structure.
Ive also explored writing using this structure of a 5-7-5 syllable pattern but not for nature or with a Kireji, instead choosing a random word (or asking a friend to give me one) and then creating a short poem using that word.
So whilst I don’t think it can be classed as a Haiku the inspiration came from it so i’d like to share some short form poetry that I wrote this week.
“Repulsive”
She’s a dirty thief
wearing the devils perfume
a sweet sickly scent
“Loathesome”
How slimy is one
who thinks himself amused by
abominations
“Social Media”
oh, the devil wears
Instagram likes and makes you
dance for attention.
“Deception”
A sinister vice
to dance on the edge of sin
two faces, one name.
Personal note-
This week I found these poems the most freeing to write, a creative way to express some deeper emotions within me that felt like coming out to play. Ive found since I started writing I am feeling my emotions a lot more intensely. Im still not sure how I feel about it, meeting these edges within myself that dance with vulnerability. But never the less here I am marking art with my creativity and swimming in the process, sharing along the way.
So with that being said let’s promptly get to our prompt!
